Daulatdia is home of the largest brothel in Bangladesh and is one of the largest brothels in the world. Mothers and their children live in one room rented dwellings, and children are sent out in the alleyways or hidden under the bed when their mothers are working. As “untouchables,” these women and children are ostracized from the rest of society and considered “unclean.” Options for a different future are limited in Daulatdia, and young girls are especially at risk of being forced into slavery themselves. Children of Promise has partnered with the Church of God in Bangladesh to help make a different future possible for children who are growing up in the brothel.
HOUSE OF HOPE
The House of Hope is a day program for sons and daughters of women who are enslaved in the sex trade in Daulatdia. The House of Hope provides a safe place where school aged children can go during the day to receive healthy food, tutoring, counseling, and to be nurtured in the love of Jesus. Because of the vulnerability of this group of 200 children, one-to-one sponsorship is not available. Every donation of $32 ensures services are available to one child for one month.
MEENA PROJECT
The Meena Project is a residential safe house for about 50 school aged daughters of women who are trapped in a cycle of human trafficking in Daulatdia. Through the Meena Project, the girls have a safe place to live, away from the daily exposure of brothel activities. They have access to nutrition, education, healthcare, discipleship, and the hope of a future outside the brothel. Without a father’s name to list on the birth certificate, children have a difficult time gaining entrance into school. Without an education, the chance for a different future is extremely difficult to pursue. Girls are especially vulnerable to being trapped in the work of the brothel as their mothers and grandmothers “age out.”
